Guys, Gackt playing the ‘bad guy’ doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy in real life. He shouldn’t be getting shit for playing a CHARACTER. It’s just a role. Disliking a character he plays because of said character’s personalities and intentions is fine, but whining at/about Gackt because of the character in the show, movie, etc. is annoying and pointless.. because it’s a CHARACTER, not HIM in real life. If you really think he’s like Takegami, Jo Tegai, Shiki, or whoever in real life— stop. Stop freaking out over stupid little shit like this, because you’re just bitching to bitch now.
What? People actually think like this?? Didn’t GACKT himself say in an interview that he’s NOT like his characters? WTF is wrong with people???
This is somewhat towards your comment, but just to clarify to newer followers what this blog is about, it’s about both the good and bad about Gackt and his fandom with a dash of humor. Any rants I’ve done on this blog about Gackt’s fandom have definitely said such things, whether I have seen it myself or other fans have told me/discussed it with me. This fandom tends to whine and moan about even little thing. I’m sure many notice this.
>”Just bitching to bitch”
>feels the need to write a lecture to the entire fandom every time they hear that someone somewhere might have complained about something.
You know what? I’m sick of all complaints being attributed to a big amorphous mass of “the fandom”. Just as an example from my personal experience, some of the same people who argued vehemently with me that his idea of a traditional woman was in any way sexist, were none the less bothered themselves by some of his more explicit sexual comments, even though I usually found them hilarious (which is at least consistent, they’re slightly more conservative women). But from the view of yet other fans who weren’t bothered by either the “traditional” comments or the perverted ones, when people got upset over the perverted comments, it was like “oh it’s those same people who are always bitching about him being sexist or whatever why don’t they just leave”.
Whoever is upset at the moment just gets shunted into the big amorphous block of “bad whiny fans”. And it’s really interesting, to see what happens when someone who has always stood by GACKT up to that point finally admits something bothers them.
There was one incident on my journal, where one of the really worshippy GACKT fans got really upset because he said something about schools not being allowed to hit kids anymore in a way that implied he didn’t agree with that (though he didn’t 100% clarify his position). She was clearly really upset because of having being physically abused as a child, and, particularly being someone who always took GACKT’S words as how to live life, really found it difficult to accept he could say something about hitting kids so flippantly, even if he didn’t actually support corporal punishment.
Of course, the people who were all “happy GACKT family” with her up to that point immediately started trying to convince her that she shouldn’t complain, and she had to accept and love him as he is. Honestly, that person had always annoyed me up to that point, but you know what? I was one of the few in that thread to immediately offer sympathy for how she felt, and tell her to sort through her feelings in her own time, and it was OKAY if after that she still felt like that was a shitty thing for GACKT to say. And not try to argue her out of her feelings or convince her that “he really MEANT xyz”, even gently.
Because what I’ve learnt is that pretty much everyone in this fandom who complains is doing it from a belief or a hurt that is very real and important to them. Sure, some people are messed up and projecting their own hurts from other things onto GACKT. People should keep a sense of respect and manners when they’re posting in an actual GACKT community, and realise that even if they’re angry right now, insulting him in a venue of GACKT fans will not go over well. But if someone is “bitching” in on their own blog or Twitter or among friends, there’s no need for the rest of the fandom to SHUN THE UNBELIEVER make up lessons and rules about what makes a “good fan”.
I know what’s helped me work through my own disagreements with him is having a group of fans who either feel the same or are willing to discuss his worldview critically to talk to. He’s an artist, for christ’s sake, you’re meant to think about what he’s telling you. ”Bitching” among my friends enables me to go to his shows without the weight on my shoulders of secretly resenting never being able to disagree with his viewpoints/work/message. Sometimes it’s just about blowing off frustration and sometimes I end up at peace with or even agreeing with it because I talked about it.
(This is the part where I apologise for using your post as a jumping off point to rant about something which certainly isn’t entirely about you and probably wasn’t that relevant to this exact post, though the tone Gacktology takes to addressing conflict in the fandom always has bothered me.)
You are certainly free to disagree with anything I say, if you feel I was too harsh, since some lessons, in a way, are my own way to rant. But I don’t turn a blind eye to people’s reasonings for not liking or disagreeing with things Gackt says and does. I have made these lessons for both sides of fandom arguments a number of times.
But when I say ‘bitching to bitch’, it’s over little things— like his hair style, or, like this, people whining actually TO or about Gackt about his role— like he is actually going to do what these characters do in real life to hurt someone. And for me, that is a reason to ‘bitch just to bitch’, because it’s something I think is so asinine that it annoys people so much that he’s playing a character they don’t approve of and they feel the need to tell him they don’t like it, or something along those lines.
His beliefs and such I think are a whole different matter. It’s not about his appearance or how his voice sounds on a track or a character he plays. That is all HIM, and if people disagree with him or are bothered by it, then it’s fine. Do I think sometimes people go a little dramatic or overboard. Yes, I do. I rant about that on my own journal or on my own tumblr, untagged. Everyone feels differently about some cases, and as much as I adore Gackt and rarely disagree with him, there have been a few times he’s said/done something that I thought was pretty dumb.
You know, people that are passionate about disagreeing with Gackt’s beliefs and such are pretty passionate to attack people who agree with Gackt’s thoughts as well, and vise versa. I’ve also had a few disagreements with friends of mine, and agreed to disagree— we were fine on it. Some people just won’t take that though, and I guess that’s their problem. We’re just in a really aggressive fandom. Even when shit starts to die down, it’s always brought back up somehow (like the plastic surgery issue, which just never. Ever. Dies).
Gackt isn’t perfect. He has his own beliefs, issues and such and the fans can take it as they want. I don’t think the sexism thing is a ‘bitch to bitch’ reason, though I personally don’t have an issue with it. But something like what I wrote on this lesson? Come on, this is something little and stupid, in my opinion. Sorry if it offended you the way I wrote it that you felt the need to write that response.
